eBay Expands Pre-Owned Condition Categories: What All eBay Sellers Need to Know

Starting February 4, 2025, eBay is enhancing its pre-owned item condition categories to provide a more accurate representation of product quality.

What’s Changing?

Previously, eBay classified all used items under a single “Pre-Owned” category. With the latest update, this category will be split into three distinct options:

  • Pre-owned – Excellent: Minimal signs of wear, like-new condition.
  • Pre-owned – Good: Gently used with some visible wear.
  • Pre-owned – Fair: Well-worn with noticeable signs of use.
According to ThredUp’s 2023 Resale Report, the global secondhand apparel market is expected to reach $350 billion by 2027, growing three times faster than the overall apparel market.

This change aims to improve buyer satisfaction by providing clearer expectations, reducing “Not as Described” returns, and ensuring a smoother transaction process for both buyers and sellers.

How This Affects eBay Sellers

  • Existing Listings: All current Pre-Owned listings will automatically be classified under “Pre-owned – Good.”
  • New Listings: Sellers must use the new condition options for better accuracy and enhanced buyer experience.
  • Inventory Mapping: To ensure your listings accurately reflect the new system, update your existing inventory and categorize items appropriately.

Next Steps for Sellers

  1. Review Your Inventory: Check your current listings and determine which condition category best fits each product.
  2. Update Listings: Adjust your listings to match the new condition values for more transparency and buyer trust.
  3. Download Category List: Ensure compliance by referring to eBay’s list of affected categories.

By adapting to these changes early, eBay sellers can optimize their listings, maintain high customer satisfaction, and minimize returns.
