Jumia Nigeria has entered into a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment to accelerate the country’s e-commerce sector and strengthen digital inclusion efforts. The collaboration aligns with the proposed National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill, aimed at providing a robust legal and regulatory framework for the nation’s digital transformation.
A high-level meeting in Abuja brought together senior government officials and Jumia executives, including CEO Temidayo Ojo, Regional Head of Public Relations and Communications Robert Awodu, and Head of Legal Uche Allison. Discussions focused on advancing Nigeria’s e-commerce ecosystem, improving rural access to online marketplaces, and enhancing competitiveness under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Temidayo Ojo emphasized Jumia’s role in closing the digital gap, highlighting the E-Commerce in Rural Areas initiative. This programme extends online shopping to underserved communities through nationwide pickup stations, a robust logistics network, and the JForce network of independent local sales consultants. According to Ojo, “The minister’s vision for a digitally inclusive Nigeria is both bold and essential. We are committed to connecting more Nigerians to the opportunities of the digital economy.”
Minister Dr. Jumoke Oduwole welcomed Jumia’s commitment and urged e-commerce stakeholders to align with the E-Governance Bill, which addresses electronic transactions, data protection, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure. She underscored that the ultimate goal is to boost economic growth, improve public service delivery, and position Nigeria as a competitive player in the global digital marketplace.
If implemented effectively, this public-private collaboration could help bridge the country’s digital divide while unlocking new economic opportunities for millions of Nigerians.
Why Jumia Is a Unique Marketplace
Jumia stands out as Africa’s leading e-commerce platform, offering a hybrid model that combines its own marketplace with a powerful logistics and payment ecosystem. It supports a wide range of product categories — from electronics and fashion to FMCG and local goods — while enabling sellers to reach both domestic and international buyers.
Through its cross-border trade program, Jumia allows global merchants to list products for sale directly to African consumers, leveraging Jumia’s payment solutions, last-mile delivery network, and localized customer service. This capability not only expands consumer choice but also opens African markets to international sellers, making Jumia a vital player in connecting Africa’s e-commerce landscape with the global economy.
