Amazon Tests “Buy for Me” AI Agent to Expand Beyond Its Own Marketplace

Amazon has begun testing a new artificial intelligence-powered shopping tool called “Buy for Me,” signaling a bold evolution in its e-commerce strategy.

Announced on April 3, 2025, via Amazon’s official blog, the tool leverages Amazon’s proprietary Nova AI models and Anthropic’s Claude to act as an autonomous shopping agent. If an item isn’t available on Amazon itself, the feature will search third-party sites, select the item, and purchase it—all within the Amazon app.

This AI agent can fill in the user’s name, address, and payment information to complete a transaction on an external website, effectively allowing Amazon to capture purchases it would traditionally lose to other retailers.

How It Works

Once users approve a product from an external source, Amazon’s AI takes over. It navigates to the site, selects the product, fills out the required details, and places the order. According to Amazon, payment data is encrypted, and Amazon does not have visibility into what users purchase outside its platform.

This sets Amazon apart from competitors like OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity, whose agents require manual payment input or use prepaid cards. Amazon’s approach is aiming for full transactional autonomy.

However, this raises questions about trust and control. Customers must rely on the AI agent to interpret their intent accurately—missteps, like ordering 1,000 units instead of 10, are not out of the question. Returns or exchanges also fall outside of Amazon’s system, with users redirected to the third-party vendor.

Why It Matters

Amazon is already a global leader in online retail, but with Buy for Me, it positions itself as a broader shopping gateway—blurring the lines between marketplace and search engine. This could redefine the way consumers shop, while also intensifying competition with other AI-powered platforms.

As with any emerging AI application, questions about accuracy, speed, and user satisfaction will shape its adoption. But one thing is clear: Amazon is building toward a future where agentic commerce becomes the new norm.
